Defrosting Mariah Carey

According to the Mariah Carey Charts (Fan Page), “All I Want For Christmas is You” received 316,143 streams on Spotify.

It was a 75% increase from the streams the song incurred last year on September 1.

The song which is a staple in every Filipino household every holiday previously gathered 180,413 streams last year.

It is not a surprise, especially in the Philippines, where Christmas is a tradition celebrated for almost four months within the year.

Christmas in the Philippines

The long-standing tradition of celebrating Christmas early in the Philippines dates back to the country’s history.

As a Spain colony for more than 300 years, Filipinos learned to celebrate Christmas the longest—at least in Asia.

Meanwhile, called “Kapaskuhan,” the Christmas season starts on September 1, the first of the “BER” months.

The festivities continue until December when it ultimately culminates on December 24, with a “Noche Buena” or a dinner feast.

The Rise of Jose Mari Chan

Aside from Mariah Carey, Jose Mari Chan, an OPM icon, is also a beloved figure during Christmas.

Well-known for Christmas tunes and carols, Jose Mari Chan released Christmas music in 1990, almost at the same time as Carey.

Since then, for more than 30 years, Jose Mari Chan has appeared in many TV shows as soon as September starts.

Although he sings Christmas songs once a year for the national audience, it made him another recognizable icon during Christmas.
